Sorbitan Stearate (Sorbitan Monostearate) is an ester of sorbitan with Stearic acid (a partial ester of stearic acid with sorbitol and its mono- and dianhydrides) derived from naturally renewable resources. It is a creamy solid without odor or taste, insoluble in water, vegetable, and mineral oils.

Sorbitan Stearate is dispersible in oils if heated and cooled and gels in mineral oil at a 10% level. It is used as an excellent water-in-oil emulsifier with an HLB value of 4.7. It is also known under the trade names Crill 3 NF and Lumisorb™ SMS KP.

Combined with polysorbates (polyoxyethylene sorbitan fatty acid esters), Sorbitan Stearate is also an effective co-emulsifier in oil-in-water systems. Manipulation of their ratio yields emulsifying systems of various HLB values, allowing for the emulsification of many cosmetic and pharmaceutical ingredients.

In addition, Sorbitan Stearate is used as a solubilizing agent, and it is especially effective when combined with other polysorbates, such as Polysorbate 60. It is listed in 21CFR 172.842 2 as a multi-purpose food additive, so it is a safe ingredient for skin care applications.
