Optiphen Plus

Optiphen Plus is a liquid preservative complex consisting of a blend of Phenoxyethanol and Sorbic Acid in an emollient base of Caprylyl Glycol. This combination offers adequate broad-spectrum protection against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, yeast, and mold while improving the skin feel of finished products.

Approved worldwide, Optiphen Plus is used in aqueous and anhydrous systems, including a wide variety of personal care products, emulsions, and wet wipes. It functions best in products with pH values below 6 but can be effective at above 6, depending on the formulation.

Optiphen Plus is compatible with most raw materials. Its recommended use level is 0.75-1.50% of the total formulation weight. Although it is paraben-free, it is a valuable tool in our cosmetic preservative toolboxes.

Notes: Including Sorbic Acid in this preservative combination will prevent Optiphen Plus from being used in any carbomer-based formulation. The acid will change the pH of your carbomer-based product and break the gel matrix.

Last, up to 2% of the population will be sensitive to phenoxyethanol, exhibited by a warm feeling or redness in delicate tissue areas such as the face, eyes, and neck and on the thinner skin of babies and children.
