Pseudoalteromonas Ferment Extract

Functions
Humectant

Pseudoalteromonas Ferment Extract (also known as Antarcticine) is an active ingredient, a glycoprotein extracted from a bacterium Pseudoalteromonas Antarctica. The discovery of this extremophile microbe learned to survive in the most extreme environments resulted from a scientific expedition to Antarctica’s King George Island.

Pseudoalteromonas Antarctica produces a unique glycoprotein covering the cell membrane and allowing microbes to survive in extreme arctic conditions. Its natural role is to protect the integrity of the native bacteria by inducing morphological changes in the ice crystals to reduce cryogenic damage. These effects have been taken and applied in cosmetics: the exopolymer shows a significant healing effect and protects lipid layers from damage due to repeated freezing and unfreezing cycles.

In scientific terms, Pseudoalteromonas Ferment Extract is a high molecular weight glycoprotein produced by a new bacterial strain – Pseudoalteromonas Antarctica. During cell growth, it makes an exopolymer of glycoprotein (76-86% protein and 8-14% sugar), and this compound has been named Antarcticine.

This glycoprotein spreads effectively on the horny layer of the epidermis, preventing skin dryness through its excellent moisturizing properties, displaying the capacity to rapidly recover and bind moisture in extreme conditions, such as post-procedural or acutely dry skin. In addition, it has proved to be effective in fighting against poor collagen turnover and ineffective elastin production.

F.A.Q.

Is there proof of the effectiveness of Pseudoalteromonas Ferment Extract?

Yes, in vitro tests showed increased Collagen I and Collagen IV production at very low concentrations. These effects can be observed after seven days in cell cultures by using the Slot Blot technique with specific antibodies, and at the end of the test, after 15 days, Collagen I production had increased 128%, and Collagen IV production had gone up 81%. In addition, Pseudoalteromonas Ferment Extract also induces synthesis of Elastin, increasing its levels around 31% after 15 days.

The macroscopic anti-wrinkle activity resulting from the boosting of Collagen and Elastin was ascertained through skin topography analysis to measure the effectiveness of an oil-in-water emulsion containing 5% of the glycoprotein. In addition, confocal laser scanning microscopy performed the analysis of the silicon replicas. As a result, the depth of the wrinkles around the eyes decreased significantly up to 50% in some cases.
