Antioxidant

The term Antioxidant generally refers to compounds that are used to stop the free radical lipid oxidation process. The phenolic AOs BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene) and BHA (butylated hydroxyanisole) are the most important ingredients presently used. They act as radical scavengers, strongly inhibiting radical chain reactions.

Metal ions catalyze radical generation and product deterioration. Therefore, chelating agents are often combined with phenolic antioxidants to form synergistic mixtures, enhancing the efficacy of the specific free radical scavengers.

Product deterioration is not only due to oxidative radical generation (autoxidation), which is most prominent in the case of natural oils, unsaturated fatty acids, and certain fragrances. Direct exposure to light can also result in photolytic radical generation, which has to be efficiently controlled using antioxidants. Therefore, products filled in transparent or translucent packaging and preparations directly exposed to light during use (e.g., bar soaps) often contain antioxidants as protectants.

Moreover, UVs can be used in these cases to reduce the degree of photolysis. Generally, water—and/or oil-soluble benzophenone derivatives are applied. If not, photofading of colored formulations, reduction of viscosity in gels and shampoos, and loss of fragrance activity are often observed.

After application, antioxidants in personal care products protect cell membranes and DNA in the nucleus from free radicals and oxidative damage. Many botanical extracts and oils, especially those derived from plants growing in extreme conditions, contain considerable amounts of potent natural antioxidants effective against many types of reactive species.

Mugwort (Artemisia Vulgaris) is a herbaceous perennial fragrant plant that grows to approximately 1-1.8 meters (3-6 ft) high. The plant grows best in full sun places in light, dry, and well-drained soil. One uses the leaves and the flowering time collected plant as a medical herb.

Ascorbic Acid Polypeptide is a vitamin C peptide complex also known under the trade name Vitazyme® C. Compared with a synthetic vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid), which is unstable in preparations, it has good stability in water solutions and other aqueous systems.

Vitamin C, chemically known as l-ascorbic acid, has been valued for centuries due to its incredible ability to prevent disease (such as scurvy), and for its important role in many biological functions.

Ascorbyl Linoleate is an ester of Ascorbic and Linoleic acids, a vitamin C oil-soluble derivative obtained by a biotechnological process using a lipase-catalyzed synthesis. It is used in food, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetic applications.

Ascorbyl palmitate is the ester of L-ascorbic and palmitic acids. It's a fat- and water-soluble (amphipathic) antioxidant that has an increased shelf life thus used in many formulations.

Ascorbyl Stearate is a stable oil-soluble Vitamin C derivative, a monoester of l-Ascorbic and stearic acids. It is mainly used in the food industry and is an edible antioxidant.

Like other forms of Vitamin C, Ascorbyl Tetraisopalmitate helps prevent cellular aging by inhibiting the cross-linking of collagen, oxidation of proteins, and lipid peroxidation.

Ascorbyl Tocopheryl Maleate is a diester of Maleic acid with Vitamin C and E (l-Ascorbic acid and α-Tocopherol) used in personal care applications and the pharmaceutical industry, with properties intrinsic to both vitamins.

Astaxanthin is a carotenoid with a pink-red color, a powerful natural antioxidant found in aquatic animals like fish, krill, and shrimps. This carotenoid is responsible for red pigmentation and has biological and nutritional functions.

This critical herb has immune-enhancing, antibacterial, antibiotic, and anti-viral properties and contains antioxidants, which protect our cells against free radical damage.

Avena Sativa Kernel Extract is a sugar-based tensor ingredient, that efficiently meets this expectation. An elastic, flexible molecule, it is a purified fraction of branched natural polysaccharides obtained from oats produced by organic farming.

Thanks to its high moisturizing ability oatmeal (Avena Sativa Kernel Flour) is a well-known ingredient widely used in cosmetics and dermatology. It forms a film that retains water in the stratum corneum.

The stratum corneum is the outermost layer of the epidermis, and this structure is made up of corneocytes and several classes of lipids.
