Emulsifier

Emulsifiers are the workhorses of the cosmetic industry. They are responsible for consistency and stability but also influence important sensory and dermatologic properties of modern skin care formulations. They offer broad emollient compatibility with efficient oil emulsification and high emulsion stability.

Emulsions that spread well and have an excellent skin feel are easily formulated. Combinations of these emulsifiers are also shown to offer additional dermatological values, such as skin-firming and smoothing properties and anti-wrinkling effects.

The wide use of ethoxylated emulsifiers in cosmetics is occasionally questioned due to dermatological and environmental factors. Emulsifiers derived from all-natural sources are entirely vegetable-based alternatives to ethoxylates, based on renewable raw materials, and have been shown to be non-irritating/sensitizing in human repeat insult patch tests.

Vegetable-based emulsifiers are usually food-grade and based on natural renewable raw materials for o/w, w/o, and w/o/w cosmetic creams and lotions. They enable the formulation of high-quality and beneficial skin care formulations with safe ingredients. They can be used to formulate w/o, o/w, and w/o/w multiple emulsions for cosmetic and dermatologic formulations.

Behenyl alcohol is a long chain linear fatty alcohol (with 22 carn atoms) derived from natural raw materials such as rapeseed or coconut oils. It is a waxy solid at room temperature used in skin and hair care formulations as a thickener, emulsifier, binding agent, solubilizer, and gallant.

Brookswax D is composed of fully saturated fatty alcohols blended with ethoxylated fatty alcohol to produce a balanced o/w emulsifier with an appropriate HLB of 9. This ingredient will produce elegant, stable o/w emulsions over wide pH ranges.

Brookswax P is a non-ionic self-emulsifying wax based on cetyl, stearyl alcohols, and ethoxylated sorbitan ester. It has an approximate HLB of 8, making it ideal for forming stable o/w emulsions with mineral oil and other commonly used hydrophobic emollients.

Butyl Oleate is an ester of n-butanol and oleic acid. It is a clear, colorless liquid without an odor. It is miscible in alcohols, ethers, vegetable and mineral oils, and insoluble in water.

In personal care products, Butyl Oleate is used as a bodying agent, emollient, and emulsifier.

Butylene Glycol Cocoate is an emollient, mono- and di-esters mix with extraordinary pigment-wetting properties. It is used in texturing makeup bases, foundations, concealers, and cover sticks for younger, more even skin tones.

Caprylic/Capric Glycerides is a mix of medium-chain mono/diglycerides primarily intended for use in pharmaceutical and personal care formulations as excipients and absorption enhancers.

Carbomers are acrylic polymers used as an emulsifier, stabilizer, or thickener in skincare formulations. Its viscosity-building effect makes it suitable for use as a co-stabilizer in skincare applications, while its crystal clear appearance also makes it ideal for use in hair gels.

Carnauba is an organic vegetable wax that comes from the leaves of a Brazilian Palm Tree called the "Tree of Life" (Copernicia Cerifera). Carnauba Wax is naturally exuded by the leaves of the Copernicia Cerifera palm to conserve the moisture within the tree and its leaves.

Cera Alba is a beeswax obtained from the product excreted by certain glands of the honeybee from which the honeycomb is made. It is freed of solid impurities by melting and centrifugation (cera flava). Finally, cera flava is bleached completely white Cera alba.
