Nouritan

Functions
Tanning agent

The ability to promote a good tan remains a cosmetic staple regardless of the growing data that exposure of the skin to sunlight is detrimental. A good tan continues to be associated with health and leisure. As a consequence, ingredients that can promote or accelerate tanning are exceptionally interesting and commercially attractive.

Nouritan is a complex mixture of tanning activators and accelerators that is encapsulated in a unique lipophilic vesicle to optimize the delivery of the actives deep into the stratum corneum and lower dermal layers. Once released onto the skin, these ingredients work synergistically to activate the tanning cellular pathways to allow the tanning process to run at its highest efficiency.

In order to confirm that Nouritan can influence the tanning process, an in vitro study was conducted to look at the ability of Nouritan to stimulate human melanocyte tyrosinase activity. In this study, cultured human melanocytes were treated with Nouritan, and the ability of the active components to stimulate tyrosinase activity was measured by examining the treated melanocytes for their ability to convert L- DOPA to DOPA chrome.

Measurements were taken using a 96-well plate reader set at 490 nm and each data set was run in triplicate. It was found that the active components of Nouritan, added to the growing melanocyte cultures at 0.25 ppm in a submicron emulsified dispersion (SMED) vehicle increased tyrosinase activity by nearly 17% over untreated controls and 11% over the vehicle alone.

During the testing, melanocyte viability, measured using the MTT assay, indicated over 80% cell viability for the treatments demonstrating that the components of Nouritan have a safe cytotoxicological profile in the presence of human skin cells.
