Thickener

Thickeners are specialized viscosity-modifying ingredients added to obtain a required viscosity. Modern high-performance thickeners for aqueous, oil-based, and surfactant systems provide effective and efficient thickening at a minimal 0.5-2% use.

Mild and naturally derived thickeners are preferable. Some are even more effective than conventional thickeners and leave a pleasing residual feel, and they don't need neutralization.

There are hard-to-thicken formulations, such as those with high salt or Sarcosinate content or pH values, which need specialized ingredients effective at low concentrations. The modern personal care ingredients industry offers a wide range of thickeners that are able to function in almost any formulation.

Glyceryl Hydroxystearate is an off-white waxy solid that functions principally as an auxiliary emulsifier in personal care preparations. Its waxlike properties approach those of beeswax. It has an HLB value of 3.4.

Glyceryl Polymethacrylate is a non-drying lubricant whit excellent water solubility. It is a clear, mildly acidic (pH: 4.7 - 5.5) multi-functional moisturizer that enhances the feel and lubricity of formulations.

Glycol Stearate is an ethylene glycol monostearate or EGMS, an ester of ethylene glycol with stearic fatty acid.

Hydrogenated Castor Oil is a white to off-white waxy solid obtained by the controlled hydrogenation of high-purity castor oil.

Hydrogenated vegetable oil is a standard lauric hard butter derived from palm kernel oil that is hydrogenated, refined, and deodorized.

It is a cellulose polyester, a granular powder, soluble in water and ethanol. Cellulose hydroxyethyl ether is used as a thickening agent, rheology modifier, emulsion stabilizer, and gelator in water/alcohol systems delivering transparent gelification of alcohol-based lotions.

Cyclodextrins are a well-known group of natural carbohydrates, which, due to their novel cyclic structure, are able to act as the host in the host-guest complex.

Corn starch is a vegetable polymer used for decades in the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries. In its regular unmodified form, corn starch does not always provide desired technical properties and can therefore undergo modification or derivatization that shapes it according to needs.

Isopropyl Myristate is an ester of plant-derived myristic acid with isopropyl alcohol, a colorless liquid used as an active emollient in skin and hair care formulations.
Rich in cholesterol, lanolin is well suited for the treatment of brittle hair and fingernails and dry and raw elbows, knees, and feet.

Lauramine Oxide is an amine oxide surfactant. It is water soluble and supplied as a 30% active solution, which is a clear, light yellow liquid.

Luvigel ® EM is a liquid thickener complex for cosmetic formulations. It is a pre-neutralized crosslinked sodium acrylates copolymer that does not require pre-swelling and is used in oil-in-water emulsions for fast viscosity build-up.

Magnesium Aluminum Silicate (MAS) is a white, highly purified mineral derived from smectite clays. It serves as stabilizing, suspending, and emulsifying agent for cosmetic formulations.

Also known as magnesium salt, this substance is found in many medicines taken today in pill form. It is regarded as safe by the Food and Drug Administration.

The white, wax-like substance is used as an easily spreadable oil component in oil-in-water emulsions, especially in lotions, to improve the water-in-oil emulsions' consistency.
Novemer® EC-1 Polymer is a pre-neutralized, crosslinked anionic polymer dispersed in oil (liquid paraffin). It's a multifunctional polymer prepared to thicken, suspend, stabilize, emulsify and enhance the skin feel of the final product.

Oryza Sativa Bran Wax is a natural pale yellow colored ester wax in the form of flakes, suitable for producing emulsions, lipsticks, and chewing gum. Its dropping point is about 78 - 84°C; acid value - 2-10 mg KOH /g; and saponification value 70-90 mg KOH/g.

Palmitic acid (Hexadecanoic acid) is a saturated, 16-carbon atom-length fatty acid, a common component of animal fats and vegetable oils. It is a white, waxy solid at room temperature.

PEG-120 Methyl Glucose Dioleate is an ethoxylated methyl glucose diether esterified with oleic acid. It is a pale yellow solid in the form of waxy flakes with a mild odor.

PEG-150 is a long-chain homopolymer of ethylene oxide with an average molecular weight of 8000. It is supplied as small, white beads with a faint odor or odorless.

PEG-150 Distearate is a non-ionic thickener and emulsifier produced through the esterification of polyethylene glycol and stearic acid (diester of a 6000 molecular weight polyethylene glycol with stearic acid).

PEG-150 Pentaerythrityl Tetrastearate is a high-performance, efficient thickener at low concentrations, even for hard-to-thicken systems (like sarcosinates in aqueous surfactant systems).

PEG-20 Glyceryl Stearate is an emulsifier, thickener, and dispersant. It is a white semi-solid with a low melt point and an HLB of 13-15.

PEG-20 Methyl Glucose Sesquistearate is an ethoxylated mixture of mono- and diesters of methyl glucose and stearic acid, a pale yellow, soft solid. It is a nonionic oil-in-water emulsifier with an HLB value of 15.

PEG-4 Rapeseedamide is an ethoxylated (4 moles of ethylene oxide) fatty acid monoethanolamide derived from rapeseed oil, a natural renewable raw material rich in unsaturated fatty acid (C18).

PEG-5 Oleylamine Methosulfate is a light yellow-cream liquid with a characteristic odor, an easy-to-use organic quaternary ammonium compound, compatible for use in anionic systems and, therefore, “2 in 1” formulations.

PEG-8 is a polyethylene glycol with polymerization level 8 which means that it contains 8 -CH2CH2O-

PEG-8 Beeswax is a golden particle, produced (ethoxylated) from beeswax, that perfectly emulsifies anti-aging formulas while contributing naturally to limiting imperceptible water loss from the skin.

Pentaerythrityl Tetrabehenate is an ester with a high melting point (80°C) that notably thickens personal care formulas. Its "cage structure" lets it trap colored pigments and, therefore, is used in decorative cosmetics. It is known under the trade name DUB PTB.

Phenyl Trimethicone is a phenyl-substituted silicone fluid. It is a clear, viscous liquid polymer with a good refractive index of 1.498 and chemical stability against oxidation.
