Emollient

Emollients are among the most versatile and essential ingredients used in personal care products today. They allow formulators to control the final product's all-important feel.

Emollients are designed to help formulators deliver particular sensory experiences into personal care formulations. Properties important in this class of ingredients are firmness, spreadability, greasiness, absorbency, slipperiness, gloss, and others.

But beyond that, emollients can provide a range of functionalities – from moisturization, solubilization, and lubrication to improving skin's elasticity and substantivity and adding gloss.

Careful selection of an emollient can invigorate the formula, making it perfect for the application. So what's the problem? There are literally thousands of choices of emollients available for evaluation—and a product needs to be finished right away.

Di-PPG-3 Ceteth-4 Adipate is a synthetic gentle "detackifying" emollient designed for mildness in leave-on products, especially for sensitive skin or where abrasion is involved in the skin treatment process (i.e., facial scrubs, microdermabrasion).

Di-PPG-3 Myristyl Ether Adipate is a transparent liquid polymer and a low-viscosity emollient with an ESSF (Emollient Skin Spreading Factor) value of 3.8. It promotes the targeted delivery of actives and pigments.

Dicaprylyl carbonate is a diester (double ester) of carbonic acid and caprylyl alcohol (1-Octanol containing eight carbon atoms) and is the powerful performer in fast-spreading emollients.

Dicaprylyl Ether is a dioctyl ether, a colorless and odorless oily liquid with low molecular weight and low polarity. High-purity dioctyl ether is not susceptible to oxidation and is readily biodegradable. It is stable over the wide pH range (3-11).

Diethylhexyl Carbonate is a diester of ethylhexyl alcohol and carbonic acid. It is an emollient for cosmetics and personal care formulations that provides a light and silky skin feel.

Diethylhexyl Maleate is a light lipophilic ester, a clear, almost colorless liquid, that exhibits excellent properties fo

Diglycerin (Diglycerol) is a clear, colorless liquid that is more dense than Glycerin. Diglycerol has been incorporated into personal care products in Japan since the 1980s. It is a mild humectant, provides gloss to hair, and can enhance fragrance/flavor impact and longevity.

Diisopropyl Adipate is a diester of isopropyl alcohol with adipic acid, a clear, colorless, odorless liquid. It is a multifunctional, light, non-occlusive, and non-oily emollient.

Diisopropyl Sebacate is the diester formed by the reaction of isopropyl alcohol and sebacic acid, and it is completely synthetically derived. It is a hydrophobic, clear, colorless, low-viscosity liquid at 25°C with almost no odor.

Diisostearoyl Trimethylolpropane Siloxy Silicate is a liquid copolymer of a silicone resin and an organic ester of isostearic acid that can be used as an emollient and film former agent in everything from protective skin products to color cosmetics.

Diisostearyl Malate is a liquid diester of an alpha hydroxy acid. This ester exhibits an excellent skin feel characterized by cushion and emolliency, leaving the skin soft and supple.

Dimer Dilinoleyl Dimer Dilinoleate is a substantive liquid ester with both intense cushion and a high degree of gloss.

Dimethicone is usually used in oil-free facial moisturizers. It decreases transdermal water loss without a greasy feel. PDMS has occlusive and emollient properties and suitable for acne and sensitive skin as it is non-comedogenic and hypoallergenic.

Dimethicone PEG-7 Cocoate is a silicone pol

Dimethiconol is a high-viscosity, hydroxyl-terminated polydimethylsiloxane. It is a clear, water-white, viscous liquid without odor, soluble in isopropyl myristate. It is insoluble in mineral oil, propylene glycol, ethanol, and water.

Dimethiconol Behenate is a silky and luxurious soft white paste that imparts a lubricious emollience. As a silicone-based ingredient, it is non-comedogenic. Dimethiconol Behenate is extremely hydrophobic and occlusive making it functional for skin barrier products.

Dimethylaminopropylamido PCA Dimethicone is a unique pyrrolidone dimethylamidopropylamine. It is an organosilicon for personal care products that provide long-lasting substantivity and emolliency and is compatible with many emollients.

Dipentaerythrityl Pentaisononanoate is a transparent and glossy ester of isononanoic acid with a pentaerythritol dimer used in decorative cosmetics, skin, and hair care applications. It provides a flashy, wet look and volume, enhancing the gloss of products.

Dipentaerythrityl Tetrabehenate/Polyhydroxystearate (known under the trade name Pelemol® DP-144B) is the reaction product of Dipentaerythritol, Tetrapolyhydroxystearate acid, and behenic acid. It is 100% active, hydrophobic, tacky, and substantive.

Dipentaerythrityl Tetrahydroxystearate/Tetraisostearate is the tetraester of dipentaerythrityl and hydroxystearic acid/isostearic acid. This hydrophobic, occlusive, skin-conditioning emollient ester is similar to lanolin in feel and consistency.

Disodium Sebacoyl Bis-Lauramidolysine is a sodium salt of a diester of Sebacic acid with Lauroyl Lysine. It is an amino acid-based multifunctional surfactant and emollient with unique properties for skin and hair care applications. It is a white powder barely soluble in water and oils.

DUB Synersol is a rational combination emollient for sun care applications. This complex is an optimized blend of different esters recognized as an SPF “Booster” and meets the different criteria required for its use in the sun sector.

DUB Synersol benefits include:

DUB Velvet Gum is a complex with an original gel structure: a silicone cross polymer combined with a branched ester with a “velvet” feel.

DUB Velvet Gum is a bentone-based gelling agent. It is an excellent rheological additive, typically used in concentrations of 2 to 6%.

The stratum corneum is the differentiated part of the epidermis, as it contains a thick layer of keratin and lipids that form an efficient barrier, selectively regulating water permeability.

Elaeis Guineensis Butter (Palm Butter) is a lipid-active ingredient with anti-aging and antioxidant properties extracted from the red-yellow mesocarp of the Elaeis Guinensis fruit. It contains 45/50% oil and has a consistency like soft butter at room temperature.

Elaeis guineensis oil, also known as “golden palm oil,” is a slow-spreading emollient extracted from Elaeis Guineensis fruits originating in Africa and has a high content of tocopherols, tocotrienols, and carotenoids, all of which are beneficial for the skin.
